The Star Anise tree is an evergreen botanical that belongs to the Magnolia family and is indigenous to Asia and the Mediterranean region, though it is also widely cultivated in France, Russia, and Spain. The 8-pointed Star Anise fruit contains seeds in each of its cavities, which are joined by a central axis, thus creating a star shape and inspiring the fruit’s name. Star Anise is also referred to as Anise Star, Badiam, Sweet Cumin, and Chinese Anise. It should not be mistaken with Japanese Anise, which has toxic effects. Since the time of Ancient Greeks, Anise Seed has been used in culinary applications as both a flavoring agent and a strengthening agent to reinforce the health and function of the digestive system. It has also been used traditionally to ease complaints associated with the respiratory system, the female reproductive system, fatigue, stress, sleeplessness, and common colds.
Steam distilled from the ripened and dried seeds of the fruit, Star Anise Essential Oil is generally colorless or pale yellow in appearance. Its scent is characterized as a strong, warming top note that is reminiscent of licorice. In small doses, it is reputed to have a stimulating effect that enhances circulation, energy, alertness, and metabolism. In larger doses, it is reputed to have a sedative effect on the body and mind, which eases feelings of anxiety, nervousness, sadness, irritability, aggression, and stress. It is traditionally used in aromatherapy for releasing toxins from the body, stressors from the mind, and congestion from the airways.

Massage blend: For a tonic and stomachic massage blend that is believed to facilitate digestion, dilute 3 drops Anise Star Essential Oil, 3 drops Ginger Essential Oil, 2 drops Cardamom Essential Oil, and 2 drops Black Pepper Essential Oil in 1 oz. of Jojoba Carrier Oil. Gently massage this blend into the abdomen to relieve indigestion, bloating, cramps, and flatulence.

Furthermore, it is said to increase circulation, thereby working to ease uncomfortable symptoms of menstruation, and to soothe gastrointestinal discomforts, such as flatulence and indigestion.
Bath blend: For a bath blend that is reputed to boost circulation and thereby relieve pain and discomfort caused by stiffness and inflammation, first combine 1 cup each of Sea Salts and Epsom Salts in a glass bowl. To this, add ¼ cup of Baking Soda and 60 ml of 1-2 preferred Carrier Oils. Next, add 6 drops of Anise Star Essential Oil. Other Essential Oils can also be added to the blend as preferred in a total of 5 drops. Thoroughly combine all the ingredients, then spoon ¼ -1 cup of the bath blend into a full bathtub of warm water. Before entering the bath, ensure that the salts have completely dissolved.
