Its name is derived from the Latin word Claris for 'clear', probably because the sticky herb was an ancient medicine used for clearing mucus and foreign objects from the eyes. By the Middle Ages, it was a common remedy, also known as Oculus Christi, or the 'Eye of Christ'. During the sixteenth century, it was used in England as a replacement for hops when brewing beer.
The flowers of this amazing plant are so tacky with a fragrant mucilage that if you touch them, the essential oil will cling to your skin. Steamed-distilled from flowers and leaves, it has a sweet, nutty, lightly musky, and woody aroma. Clary Sage is one of the most valuable oils for menstrual problems, childbirth, and menopause, and is used as an herbal flavoring agent in alcoholic beverages.
