Botanical name: Citrus sinensis
Country of origin: USA
Derived from the peel of the orange fruit, Orange Essential Oil ranges in color from Yellow-Orange to Golden-Brown and emits the fruit’s signature sweet, citrus aroma, albeit more intensely, due to its concentrated nature. This bright, uplifting scent is said to blend well with other fruity, floral, or spicy scents, such as the essential oils of Bergamot, Clary Sage, Cinnamon Bark, Clove Bud, Lemon, Lavender, Myrrh, Nutmeg, and Sandalwood.
The warm, cheerful scent of this oil is commonly used in aromatherapy to enhance the mood, reduce stress, and to boost immunity against symptoms of common colds and the flu. It is also reputed to help soothe digestive discomforts, such as slow digestion, constipation, and flatulence. With pain-reducing qualities, this oil makes an ideal salve for areas of the body afflicted with soreness, irritation, and even spasms. Reputed to slow the appearance of the signs of aging – including dark spots, sagging skin, and wrinkles – Orange Oil is a traditional ingredient in skincare products. It is known to promote the complexion’s natural radiance by eliminating dull skin, thus working to naturally encourage the healthy growth of new skin and helping diminish the appearance of blemishes. When applied to acne-prone areas, Orange Oil’s anti-bacterial properties are believed to help prevent future breakouts.
Quick and easy recipes:
Massage blend: For a tonic and mood-enhancing massage oil recipe that is reputed to relax tense muscles, reduce pain, and protect against infection, dilute 12 drops of Orange Oil in 30 ml of a preferred carrier oil, then rub this blend into areas of skin afflicted with soreness, swelling, or inflammation. This is also said to improve sleep quality. For enhanced effectiveness, Orange Oil can be combined with other essential oils that are known to facilitate healing, such as Tea Tree. For a slightly more complex massage blend that is believed to relieve stress and comfort the mind, combine Orange Oil with other soothing oils, such as Lavender, Sandalwood, or Rose Geranium.
Diffuser blend: To diffuse Orange Oil simply, especially to freshen an enclosed environment, dilute 15 drops in a 60 ml (2 oz.) spray bottle filled with water, then spritz a small amount of the blend in preferred indoor areas. This is reputed to lift the mood and diminish feelings of anxiety, tension, and restlessness. Alternatively, Orange Oil can be combined with other citrus essential oils, such as Lime and Lemon, for a total of 6 drops.
Bath blend: For a nourishing bath oil recipe that is believed to help support metabolic function while soothing and softening dehydrated, irritated skin, first dilute 5-15 drops of Orange Essential Oil in 1 tablespoon (15 ml) of a preferred carrier oil and ½ cup of Epsom Salts, then add the blend to a warm bath. Before entering the bath, ensure that the salts have completely dissolved.
